Abstract
The poem "Geode" explores the narrator’s realization that a geode—a hollow, nearly spherical volcanic rock with mineral deposits—symbolized something deeply needed in his marriage, particularly by his ex-wife. Despite initially misunderstanding what was missing in their relationship, the narrator recognizes the geode’s significance after giving it as a gift, which moved his wife emotionally. The geode, sourced from Madagascar, serves as a metaphor for hidden beauty and complexity, and later becomes a personal object for the narrator’s reflection. The poem highlights themes of emotional discovery, loss, and the symbolic meaning found in natural objects.
