Abstract
This article from New Scientist highlights the dark side of cobalt mining in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The photos by Pascal Maitre depict the impact of the high demand for cobalt, which is used in various technological applications. Large extraction operations by corporations have led to the displacement of villages, as shown in the main image of villagers searching for cobalt among waste dumped near one of the largest open-cast mines. Additionally, there are unofficial mines operated by "artisanal" miners who receive little pay for their work. Efforts are being made to regulate this trade and improve working conditions.
