Abstract

Germany may need to extend the operation of its reserve coal-fired power plants due to delays in building new gas plants, according to grid operator Amprion GmbH. The closure of nuclear plants has reduced the country's power generation margin, making the coal plants necessary for maintaining electricity supply. The cost of keeping the reserve fleet ready is over €1 billion a year, and there are concerns about the profitability of this arrangement for operators. Plans to exit coal by the end of the decade have faced setbacks, leading to the potential need for coal plants to remain operational well into the next decade. [Extracted from the article]
