Abstract

President Umaro Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau has replaced his prime minister, Geraldo Joao Martins, after what he described as an "attempted coup" on December 1st. Rui Duarte Barros has been appointed as the new prime minister and has been tasked with fighting corruption. However, there are conflicting reports about Martins' departure, with some media outlets stating that he had resigned. The political crisis in Guinea-Bissau, exacerbated by the clashes between security forces, could deepen due to the tensions between the executive and the legislature in the semi-presidential system.
