Abstract
On December 1st, Guinea-Bissau experienced a gun battle in the capital city, highlighting political divisions in the country. The clash occurred between units of the security forces, resulting in two deaths. The national guard and special forces guarding the president were involved in the clashes. The events are believed to reflect old rivalries between the current president and the historic ruling party. The army announced the capture or surrender of the commander of the national guard, and security was heightened in key areas. The events were labeled as an attempted coup by both the opposition and the president. Following the incident, President Umaro Sissoco Embalo dissolved parliament and appointed a new prime minister. Tear gas was later used by the police to disperse legislators attempting to access parliament premises. The West African bloc (ECOWAS) condemned the attempted coup and extended their support mission in Guinea-Bissau. [Extracted from the article]
