Abstract

The article focuses on the complex relationship between the Democratic Republic of Congo's (DRC) abundant mineral resources and the ongoing conflict involving the March 23 (M23) rebel group in the mineral-rich eastern provinces of North and South Kivu. It details how Western countries—including Belgium, France, the United States—and other global actors such as China and some African nations, notably Rwanda, have been involved in exploiting the DRC's minerals like cobalt, coltan, copper, and gold, often fueling and benefiting from regional instability. The paper highlights the 2025 US-brokered peace deal between Rwanda and the DRC aimed at ending decades of conflict linked to mineral control, while also discussing sanctions imposed by the European Union on Rwandan officials and entities accused of illicit mineral trade. It concludes by recommending the withdrawal of foreign troops from the DRC to allow the country greater sovereignty over its natural resources and peacebuilding efforts.
