Abstract
The article focuses on the career and musical journey of Steve Waterman, a respected trumpeter and educator known for collaborations with notable jazz musicians such as John Surman, Andy Sheppard, and Mal Waldron. Waterman began his musical education on the violin before transitioning to the trumpet at age ten, inspired by 1940s big band music. Over the years, he has played various instruments including the trumpet and flugelhorn, some of which he co-designed with Geneva Instruments to improve tuning during performances. His extensive experience includes playing in youth orchestras, showbands, and studying jazz improvisation at Trinity College of Music, leading to an international career that has influenced his composing and arranging.
