Abstract

The article focuses on the Independent Society of Musicians’ (ISM) advocacy for reforming Non-Disclosure Agreements (NDAs) and supporting the orchestra sector to create a safer music industry. It highlights the ISM’s campaign for the UK government’s Employment Rights Bill to ban NDAs that conceal discrimination and harassment, a practice that has silenced many musicians, especially women and freelancers vulnerable to career repercussions. The ISM has also developed a toolkit with the Equality and Human Rights Commission to help orchestras address harassment through practical measures tailored to the unique challenges of orchestral work. While legislative change is imminent, the ISM emphasizes that cultural transformation across the sector is essential to ensure accountability and support for victims.
