Abstract

This article focuses on integrating the ukulele into classroom music instruction through open chord activities, emphasizing its connection to the Orff-Schulwerk approach. It highlights the use of the ukulele’s open C6 chord (C, E, G, A), which aligns with the C pentatonic scale, as a supportive and accessible starting point for students, especially younger learners who may struggle with more complex chords like the three-fingered G chord. The article presents movement, body percussion, and strumming exercises using thumb and index finger techniques, paired with poems and songs to foster musical creativity and comfort with the instrument. It also references Orff instruments and pentatonic accompaniments, with plans to introduce one-finger chords (Fadd9 and C7) in subsequent lessons.
