Abstract

This article focuses on comparative evaluations of recordings of Richard Strauss's tone poem *Ein Heldenleben*, particularly contrasting performances by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under Hans Graf and the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra under JoAnn Falletta. The Buffalo recording is praised for its sensitive, romantic interpretation and natural sound balance, while the Singapore performance is described as more businesslike and emotionally restrained despite strong orchestral playing. Additionally, the Buffalo album includes a violin concerto by Behzad Ranjbaran, a Tehran-born composer teaching at Juilliard, inspired by the Persian kamancheh instrument. The review concludes by reaffirming the enduring status of three EMI recordings of *Ein Heldenleben* by Karajan, Kempe, and Beecham as benchmarks for this repertoire. [Extracted from the article]
