Polish and American preschool children's preferences for and perceptions of popular music.

Abstract

This study examined Polish and American preschool children's preferences for and perceptions of popular music used by their teachers in formal instruction. Participants aged 4 to 6 from Poland and the United States showed a preference for popular songs they already knew, especially those with fast tempos and strong beats, often from children's films, radio, and internet sources. Children's perceptions focused mainly on lyrics and associated imagery, expressing their engagement more effectively through movement and drawing than verbal description of musical elements. The findings suggest that incorporating familiar popular music with lyrics into early childhood music education can enhance engagement, and that teachers should provide opportunities for children to express their musical experiences non-verbally while developing music vocabulary.
