Abstract
The article focuses on the resurgence of the accordion in the Chicagoland area and the role of the Accordionists & Teachers Guild, International (ATG) in promoting accordion education and performance. It traces the instrument’s mid-20th-century popularity in Chicago and nationwide, highlighting the structured progression of accordion students through bands and orchestras, as well as national and international competitions such as the Coupe Mondiale. The ATG continues to support accordionists through festivals, competitions, online workshops, and community outreach, including the Chicagoland Accordion Academy, which fosters a diverse group of students and performers. Advances in accordion design and pedagogy, including the use of free bass systems and chromatic button accordions, are noted as part of the instrument’s evolving tradition.
