Abstract
This article examines the development and current state of popular music and jazz education in Finland, focusing on the Helsinki Pop & Jazz Conservatory, a pioneering institution established in 1972. It outlines the conservatory's history, its dual structure comprising basic and vocational education, and its role in elevating Finnish popular music through rigorous, versatile, and student-centred pedagogy. The author, a former student and current lecturer at the conservatory, presents a pedagogical study introducing the Student-Centred Musical Expertise (SCME) approach, which integrates teacher expertise with student-chosen repertoire to enhance musical skills such as groove, improvisation, and technique. The study's findings suggest that balancing demanding learning outcomes with student agency fosters both high musical standards and intrinsic motivation, reflecting the institution's tradition of perseverance and innovation in Finnish popular music education.
