Abstract

The article focuses on a recently rediscovered 1829 drawing by George Petrie (1790–1866) titled "The Cashel Bell," found in the Kirkpatrick Archive at the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. The sepia-toned drawing depicts a handbell, a small church identified as St MacDara’s Church on St MacDara’s Island, and a round tower, possibly idealized or generic, arranged in a landscape to evoke Irish history. The bell, now housed in the National Museum of Ireland, was part of the collection of Henry Dawson, a Royal Irish Academy colleague of Petrie. The composition reflects Petrie’s blend of historical record and romanticized imagery, illustrating objects central to 19th-century debates on Irish ecclesiastical artifacts and architecture.
