Abstract
This article reviews a recording featuring British pianist Martin James Bartlett and conductor Joshua Weilerstein with the London Philharmonic, focusing on works by Rachmaninoff and Gershwin. Bartlett’s interpretation of Rachmaninoff’s Paganini Rhapsody is noted for clarity and stylistic shifts, though it weakens in later variations. The album includes Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue using Ferde Grofe’s 1942 orchestration, which is described as somewhat stiff and muffled compared to classic recordings. Bartlett’s performances of Rachmaninoff songs and Gershwin transcriptions receive mixed assessments, often compared unfavorably to those by Earl Wild. The review highlights the collaboration’s strengths in orchestral detail but notes limitations in capturing the full spirit of the repertoire.
