Abstract
The article focuses on incorporating Black Gospel music performance practices into ear training pedagogy in Canadian post-secondary music education. Drawing from personal experience and research, the author integrates elements such as call-and-response, vocal harmonization, syncopated rhythms, and part-singing to create relevant, inclusive, and engaging ear training exercises that reflect the diverse musical backgrounds of students. This approach aims to enhance students' musicianship by connecting aural skills development to contemporary and culturally resonant music, fostering a sense of representation and ongoing motivation. The article also contrasts this method with traditional Eurocentric ear training, advocating for broader, more diverse pedagogical strategies in music education.
