Abstract
This article focuses on trumpeter and arranger Guy Barker’s orchestral adaptation of Miles Davis’s landmark album *Kind of Blue* for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival, commemorating Davis’s 100th birthday. Barker’s suite, performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and his big band, reimagines the largely improvised sextet album for a large ensemble, incorporating orchestrations of key solos and motifs while maintaining the spirit of the original work. The project builds on an earlier commission by the BBC Philharmonic and has been performed by various orchestras internationally. Barker emphasizes that the performance is not a recreation of Davis’s playing but a symphonic tribute where Davis’s presence is suggested rather than directly replicated. [Extracted from the article]
