Abstract

This article focuses on Ilya Toshinskiy’s journey from growing up near Moscow to becoming a prominent Nashville session musician specializing in bluegrass and country music. Toshinskiy, a longtime member of Local 257 (Nashville, TN), developed an early passion for the banjo and guitar influenced by his Russian teacher and exposure to American bluegrass artists. He co-founded the Russian bluegrass band Bering Strait, which gained international recognition before he settled in Nashville, where he built a successful studio career working with top country artists and earning multiple industry awards. Beyond music, Toshinskiy values his membership in the American Federation of Musicians (AFM) for its financial protections and has also pursued real estate as a complementary career.
