Abstract

The article focuses on Adrianne Greenbaum’s work in preserving and showcasing the flute’s role in klezmer music, an instrument largely replaced by the clarinet in early 20th-century klezmer ensembles. Greenbaum’s album, *Di Klezmer Flute Nisht Fargesn*, features ten flutes dating from the mid-19th century to the modern era, each with unique historical significance, including instruments hidden during the Nazi threat and those linked to religious and familial traditions. The flutes, many pre-Boehm design, produce distinct sounds different from modern flutes and reflect the instrument’s evolution within klezmer music. The article highlights the cultural and historical importance of these flutes in klezmer heritage.
