Abstract

Hasna el Becharia, a groundbreaking Algerian singer, passed away in May 2024 at the age of 74. Known as "The Desert Rocker," she was inspired by the Algerian Gnawa and broke social barriers by secretly making her own instrument, becoming one of the first women to master the gimbri and electric guitar. Hasna became popular in the 70s and went on to inspire future generations of North African female musicians. She portrayed a model of liberty, bravery, and generosity, but also faced physical threats. Additionally, the obituary mentions the passing of Palle Danielsson, a Swedish jazz double bassist, Muluken Melesse, a popular Ethiopian singer, and Phil Wiggins, a virtuoso harmonica player.
