Abstract
The article highlights ten essential albums featuring the ngoni, a West African lute considered an ancestor of the banjo, known for its hollowed wooden or calabash body, animal hide covering, and four to six strings on a fretless neck. It presents key recordings by prominent ngoni players and ensembles, including Bassekou Kouyate’s amplified, rock-influenced style, Makan Badjé Tounkara’s innovative seven-string ngoni, and collaborations such as Cheick Hamala Diabaté with American banjoist Bob Carlin exploring the instrument’s transatlantic roots. The selection also features female ngoni player Kokanko Sata, the fusion work of Trio Da Kali with the Kronos Quartet, and projects blending traditional Malian rhythms with electronic music, exemplified by Electro Bamako. These albums collectively showcase the ngoni’s versatility across genres and its cultural significance within West African musical traditions.
