Motown Records, founded by Berry Gordy Jr. in 1959, was pivotal in promoting racial integration through its iconic artists and polished image. Stax Records, established in 1957, became synonymous with the Memphis Sound and produced notable soul artists before facing bankruptcy in 1975. Philadelphia International Records, founded in 1971, created the "Philly Soul" sound and achieved significant commercial success. Other labels discussed include Sussex Records, known for its impact on rhythm and blues, Death Row Records, which popularized gangsta rap, and Uptown Records, credited with shaping contemporary R&B and hip-hop.
