Abstract

The article discusses the history and significance of the Kilkenny Militia Band uniform, which is currently on display at the Soldiers and Chiefs exhibition in Dublin's Collins Barracks. The uniform is a testament to the importance of martial music in Ireland during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Military bands, including the Kilkenny Militia Band, were seen as valuable social amenities and symbols of unit prestige. These bands played wind and percussion instruments, often with black soldiers dressed in quasi-Moorish attire. The bands not only provided parade ground pageantry but also enlivened public events and stimulated popular interest in music. However, military musicians could also encourage sectarianism and political discontent. After the wars, militia bands continued to perform at various events, and their members pursued diverse musical careers. The article highlights the impact of military music on Irish culture and politics, as well as its appropriation for new political movements. [Extracted from the article]
