Abstract

This article focuses on Matt Glendening, who became principal clarinet of the Royal Opera House (ROH) orchestra in 2021 at age 23. It details his involvement in the production process, including rehearsals and coordinating with singers, as well as his musical background, education at the Royal College of Music, and audition experience. Glendening discusses the challenges of balancing sound in the orchestra pit, his favorite operas and performances, and his preference for playing opera over ballet.
