Abstract

The article discusses the concept of collective innovation and its significance for human advancement, highlighting the unclear processes behind creative collaboration. It introduces collective musical improvisation, specifically in free jazz, as a model for studying real-time creative processes. By analyzing free jazz recordings, researchers found that musicians employ a search strategy known as Area Restricted Search, which has evolutionary roots similar to animal foraging behaviors. This finding suggests a deep evolutionary connection between cognition, culture, and the human ability for collective innovation. [Extracted from the article]
