Abstract

The article focuses on the tribute album *American Blue*, created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of George Gershwin’s *Rhapsody in Blue*, a piece noted for its blend of classical and jazz with blues influences. Curated by Rebecca Cordes, the album highlights both well-known composers like Duke Ellington and Aaron Copland, and historically overlooked figures such as Florence Price—the first African-American woman symphonic composer—and Mary Lou Williams, a self-taught arranger and pianist influential in big band and stride piano styles. Price’s *Scenes in Tin Can Alley*, a rediscovered work reflecting social issues of its era, and Williams’s arrangements and compositions exemplify the album’s exploration of American music’s roots. *American Blue* is available on streaming platforms and CD.
