Abstract

French vocalist Cyrille Aimée discusses her musical influences and how Miles Davis' album "Kind of Blue" had a profound impact on her. Aimée grew up listening to Latin music and pop, but it was Django Reinhardt and Ella Fitzgerald who introduced her to improvisation and the American songbook. When she moved to the US, her ear training teacher recommended she listen to "Kind of Blue," which opened her up to new sounds and textures, particularly the upright bass played by Paul Chambers. Aimée's experience studying jazz in the US without being able to read music also shaped her approach as a vocalist. She later realized the importance of lyrics after graduating. "Kind of Blue" inspired Aimée to explore different colors and textures in her own improvisations, pushing her to go beyond staying within the chord and swing. [Extracted from the article]
