Abstract

This article focuses on soprano Marina Costa-Jackson’s personal experience with mental health challenges, particularly severe stage fright and performance anxiety, throughout her opera career. She describes intense fear and physical symptoms before performances, including during a major competition judged by Plácido Domingo. Costa-Jackson credits her mother’s encouragement and her own evolving self-support in overcoming impostor syndrome and fear, learning to manage stress and reframe her internal dialogue. She emphasizes that fear does not predict failure and can be embraced as part of the artistic journey, encouraging others to persist despite anxiety.
