Abstract

The article focuses on *Cats: The Jellicle Ball*, a reimagined Broadway production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s *Cats* that premiered in 2024. This version transforms the original feline characters into human ballroom performers, featuring a predominantly Black and brown queer and trans cast from the ballroom community, and emphasizes voguing, dance, and elaborate costumes without traditional cat makeup or ears. Co-directed by Zhailon Levingston and Bill Rauch, the production blends ballroom culture with Broadway traditions, fostering collaboration and mutual understanding between the two artistic communities. Notable cast members include Tony winner André De Shields as Old Deuteronomy and Chasity “Tempress” Moore as Grizabella, whose performance of “Memory” has been widely praised. The show is described as a vibrant, socially conscious theatrical experience that challenges norms and celebrates queer identity. [Extracted from the article]
