Abstract
The article discusses new research from the University of Pecs in Hungary that explores the psychological aspects of musical improvisation. The study involved semi-structured interviews with 11 musicians and utilized Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to identify two main themes: self-actualization and intersubjectivity. Findings suggest that musical improvisation serves as a medium for self-expression and exploration, fostering connections between improvisers and listeners, and can trigger peak experiences such as flow states. The research highlights the psychological motives and mental health functions associated with musical improvisation beyond traditional contexts like music therapy and jazz.
