Abstract
This article reviews two recordings featuring Beethoven's Septet and related works by the Dresden Chamber Soloists and the Swiss Chaarts Chamber Artists. The Dresden Chamber Soloists, members of the Dresden State Orchestra, deliver a technically flawless but somewhat detached performance of Beethoven's Septet alongside Simone Fontanelli's contemporary Dresden Sextet, which the reviewer finds musically challenging despite virtuosic execution. In contrast, the Chaarts Chamber Artists' rendition of Beethoven's Septet is noted for its lively and engaging interpretation, though the lead violin is under-recorded. The Chaarts ensemble's performance of Ferdinand Ries's arrangement of Beethoven's Symphony No. 3 ("Eroica") is highlighted for its clarity, brisk tempos, and insightful articulation, offering a fresh perspective on the symphony's structure and emotional impact.
