Abstract

This article reviews a recording of Brahms's Clarinet Sonatas and three Intermezzos performed by Native Australian musicians Nicola Boud (clarinet) and Anthony Romaniuk (piano) on period instruments, including a replica boxwood clarinet and an 1875 Steinway piano. The performers, both trained in the Netherlands in period instrument performance, aim to recreate the sound world of Brahms's time. While the Intermezzos are praised for their interpretation and fit with the instruments, the clarinet sonatas are described as uneven, partly due to the limitations of the period clarinet and piano used. The review suggests that although historically informed, the performance may lack the sonic qualities expected from modern instruments. [Extracted from the article]
