Abstract
This article focuses on the musical works and compositional style of Charles Ingram, an American composer born in 1951 with degrees in composition and choral music. After retiring from his professorship at Los Angeles Southwest College in 2008, Ingram devoted himself full-time to composition, producing works primarily for brass instruments and piano, including several pieces for tuba and euphonium. His music is characterized by tonal yet harmonically ambiguous language, frequent use of syncopation, imitation, and polytonal chord clusters, often featuring creative rhythmic groupings and mode changes. Notable works discussed include the Sonatina, Trifles, and Three Moods, which exhibit Ingram's preference for concise forms, characterful movement titles, and a blend of lyrical and rhythmic elements influenced by a range of musical styles from Ravel to 1970s popular music.
