Abstract
The Carter Family Fold Memorial Music Center in Hiltons, Virginia, was established in 1974 by Janette Carter to preserve old-time music, particularly the legacy of the original Carter Family trio, considered foundational in country music history. The center hosts weekly Saturday night shows featuring acoustic performances without electronic instruments, maintaining traditional Appalachian music practices. The site also includes A. P. Carter’s cabin and country store, now a museum with interactive exhibits and memorabilia, including items related to Johnny Cash, who performed there before his death. Operated by Janette’s daughter, Rita Forrester, and supported by local volunteers, the Fold emphasizes community engagement and cultural preservation through storytelling and live music. The organization maintains an online presence via Facebook and Instagram to connect with a broader audience.
