Abstract

The article focuses on recent developments and ongoing initiatives within the Perioperative Nurses College (PNC) of New Zealand, highlighting their educational efforts, international engagement, and workforce challenges. It details the success of the PNC's perioperative webinar series and participation at the 2023 Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Global Surgical Conference in Texas, where key themes included team communication, reducing surgical site infections, smoke-free perioperative environments, and the importance of evidence-based practice. The article also addresses the global shortage of perioperative nurses, citing factors such as workforce aging, burnout, and high workloads, and discusses proposed solutions like advanced education, free tertiary education, and mandated nurse-patient ratios. Additionally, it outlines current PNC projects, including conference planning, legislative submissions, and publication efforts, while encouraging members to participate in the 2023 PNC Awards.
