Abstract
This article reviews literature on mental health difficulties experienced by paramedics, focusing on factors contributing to conditions such as depression, anxiety, burnout, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and suicide. Four main themes emerged: frequent exposure to traumatic incidents, negative attitudes toward emotional expression within paramedic culture, the role and challenges of peer and social support, and the need for better preparation of paramedics—especially students—for mental health challenges. The review highlights gaps in research on paramedic students and UK populations, noting that psychological support and early trauma-informed interventions are critical to improving paramedics' wellbeing and work quality.
