Abstract

This article focuses on moral distress experienced by oncology nurses, defined as psychological distress arising when nurses are constrained from acting according to their ethical beliefs. Factors contributing to moral distress include challenges in managing patient suffering, unclear goals of care, perceived futile treatments, and stressful work environments exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic intensified moral distress due to staffing shortages, supply limitations, and high patient mortality, leading to increased burnout and nurse turnover. Strategies to mitigate moral distress emphasize a resilience approach, including the use of ethics committees, self-care practices, and the "four Rs" framework—recognize, release, reconsider, and restart—to help nurses navigate ethical dilemmas and maintain moral integrity.
