Abstract
This article focuses on the National Association of School Nurses' (NASN) efforts to support school nurses in legislative advocacy to improve student health and educational outcomes. NASN has developed resources such as an Advocacy tab on its website, a Medicaid webpage, and an Action Center to enable school nurses to engage with policymakers on issues like Medicaid funding, which is vital for school health services. Key legislative priorities include the bipartisan Nurses for Under-Resourced Schools Everywhere (NURSE) Act, protection of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and reauthorization of the Title VIII Nursing Workforce Development Programs. NASN also addresses the nursing shortage by advocating against proposed federal student loan regulations that exclude nursing from "professional" degree status. Additionally, NASN partners with state affiliates to enhance local advocacy efforts, providing tailored support and tools to influence state and local policies affecting school nursing and student well-being.
