Zinc and aging: a narrative review of the effects on hematopoiesis and its link with diseases.

Abstract

This article focuses on the relationship between zinc, aging, and hematopoiesis, the process of blood cell formation in the bone marrow. It highlights that zinc deficiency is more prevalent among older adults due to reduced dietary intake and absorption, which may exacerbate age-related impairments in hematopoietic tissue and contribute to various chronic diseases such as immune dysfunction, neurodegenerative disorders, diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and sarcopenia. Zinc plays critical roles in immune regulation, inflammation control, DNA repair, and cellular homeostasis, all of which are affected during aging. Although zinc supplementation shows potential benefits in improving hematopoietic function and mitigating some aging-associated conditions, the precise mechanisms and direct effects on hematopoiesis remain incompletely understood, warranting further research.
