Abstract

This article focuses on the combined effects of intermittent fasting (IF) and the ketogenic diet (KD) on diabetes remission and blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). It reviews various types of IF and KD, their mechanisms, contraindications, and health outcomes, highlighting that both dietary patterns individually improve glycemic control and weight loss, with some case studies showing diabetes remission when combined. The article emphasizes that while IF and KD together show promise for managing T2DM, especially under clinical supervision, there is a lack of large-scale randomized controlled trials to definitively establish their combined efficacy and safety. It also outlines contraindications and recommends careful monitoring of blood glucose, ketones, and patient symptoms during these dietary interventions.
