Abstract

The article focuses on the detrimental cycle of kill-pen bailouts in the horse industry, where horses purportedly "saved" from slaughter often return to auctions or unsuitable homes, perpetuating neglect and financial exploitation. It explains that the funds raised to rescue these horses are inflated due to multiple intermediaries taking cuts, and the horses frequently remain sick, dangerous, or unrehabilitated. This cycle strains legitimate rescue organizations, which must then care for horses abandoned by bailout participants who lack proper resources. The article emphasizes the importance of education to prevent support of these schemes and encourages advocacy for legislative measures like the SAFE Act to close slaughter borders.
