May alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks affect the rate of orthodontic tooth movement? A systematic review of animal studies.

Abstract
This article systematically reviews animal studies investigating the effects of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages on the rate of orthodontic tooth movement. The review found that caffeine consumption tends to accelerate tooth movement after three weeks of force application, while carbonated soft drinks such as Fanta® and Coca-Cola® appear to decelerate it; alcohol showed no significant impact. However, due to methodological limitations, unclear risk of bias, and differences between animal models and human clinical scenarios, the evidence remains inconclusive regarding the definitive influence of these substances on orthodontic tooth movement. The authors recommend further standardized research to clarify these effects and their potential clinical implications.
