Abstract

This article critically reviews the health risks associated with high consumption of soft drinks, focusing on nutritional, dental, and medical aspects. It highlights that soft drinks, which are high in sugars and acids but low in nutritional value, are linked to oral diseases such as dental erosion and caries, as well as systemic conditions including obesity, type-2 diabetes mellitus, hypertension, bone fractures, and mental health issues like depression and anxiety. The review emphasizes the biological mechanisms underlying these associations and notes the importance of a multi-professional approach involving physicians, dentists, and nutritionists to guide patients in moderating soft drink intake. It also calls for further research and industry efforts to develop healthier beverage alternatives.
