Abstract
This article systematically reviews risk factors for malnutrition in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC), a group of malignancies affecting the upper aerodigestive tract. Analyzing 18 studies involving 2,593 patients, it identifies seven categories of risk factors: disease-related, genetic, lifestyle, nutritional health, physiologic, psychological, and treatment-related. Key contributors include advanced tumor stage, genetic polymorphisms, alcohol consumption, reduced oral intake, inflammation, psychological distress, and side effects from radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery. The review highlights the variability in malnutrition assessment tools and underscores the importance of early identification and comprehensive nutritional management by healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, to improve patient outcomes.
