Abstract

Scientists are working to add sensors to fiber-optic cables on the sea floor in order to detect earthquakes, tsunamis, and global warming. These "smart" cables can carry internet data while also monitoring the ocean and the earth below. The cables can detect tsunami waves and provide early warnings, making them particularly useful in regions at risk of tsunamis. They can also track deep ocean warming, changes in ocean currents, and sea level rise. Additionally, smart cables can capture earthquake waves from the far side of the planet and provide valuable data for understanding Earth's mantle. [Extracted from the article]
