Abstract

Phoebe Woodworth-Jefcoats, an oceanographer, conducted a study with six other authors on increasing access to oceanography degrees for adult learners. The study highlights the growing need for expertise and innovation in the ocean sciences to ensure environmentally sustainable growth in the global ocean economy. The authors identified barriers to degree completion for adult learners and provided recommendations for program and campus leaders, such as offering evening and online courses, allowing part-time enrollment, and increasing graduate assistant salaries. They also suggested creating research-only graduate programs and providing access to STEM advisors and mentors. The study emphasizes the importance of making changes to attract more students to the field of oceanography. [Extracted from the article]
