Abstract
The article focuses on a marine heat wave in the Pacific Ocean that is contributing to unusually high temperatures across parts of North America and influencing weather patterns. Marine heat waves occur when sea surface temperatures exceed 90% of typical regional levels, and their frequency and intensity have increased significantly in recent decades, a trend linked to climate change. This ocean warming affects coastal climates by reducing the ocean’s cooling effect and can alter the jet stream, leading to warmer air flows and extreme weather events such as droughts and stronger storms. The current marine heat wave is expected to impact winter weather by increasing storm activity on the U.S. west coast and poses significant challenges for marine ecosystems due to prolonged elevated temperatures.
