Abstract

The article focuses on the development and impact of the RI 2000 semi-closed rebreather in the evolution of cave diving. Originating from the French DC 55 rebreather's operating principle invented by Jean Dufau-Casanabe, the RI 2000 was designed in the 1980s to address the limitations of open-circuit diving in long, deep cave explorations, offering enhanced gas efficiency and safety through triple redundancy. After extensive testing and pioneering dives in European caves such as La Doux de Coly and Cogol dei Veci, the RI 2000 demonstrated the feasibility of fully autonomous rebreather cave dives, enabling distances and depths previously unreachable. The article also situates the RI 2000 within the broader historical context of rebreather technology, noting its influence on later models like the RB-80 and the current trend toward closed-circuit rebreathers with dual or triple redundancy for extreme cave diving.
