Abstract

The article focuses on a study investigating the differences in subcortical brain volume between schizophrenia patients treated with chlorpromazine (CPZ) or clozapine (CLZ) and healthy controls. Using structural MRI, the research involved 24 patients from each treatment group and assessed their clinical symptoms and social functioning. Findings indicated a significant increase in pallidum and putamen volumes in the CPZ group compared to both the CLZ group and healthy controls, while thalamic volume was reduced in both patient groups relative to controls. The study suggests that these neuroanatomical differences may reflect the distinct pharmacological effects of the antipsychotic treatments and proposes thalamic volume as a potential neuroimaging marker related to social function.
