Abstract

This article focuses on a study from Tochigi, Japan, examining changes over time in hypnotic medications involved in suicide attempts, particularly the shift from benzodiazepines (BZs) to non-GABAergic hypnotics such as dual orexin receptor antagonists (DORAs) and melatonin receptor agonists (MRAs). The multicenter retrospective cohort study analyzed 1,111 suicide attempt cases from 2020 to 2025, finding a significant increase in DORA involvement in overdose-related attempts, while BZ involvement declined only in overdose contexts. The research suggests that evolving availability of hypnotics may influence the types of medications used in self-poisoning incidents. [Extracted from the article]
